Top performance with compact dimensions

Top performance with compact dimensions
Seed drill with mechanical seed distribution

The AI-620-SNT seed drill (image) with mechanical seed distribution is specially designed for optimal performance – with more compact dimensions that now vary between one, two and three metres. Not only the toolbar has been improved, the gearbox concept is also new. A single interface controls the amount of seed in each row along with the distribution of fertilisers and insecticides or fungicides. Users can choose between the electro-hydraulic and the latest electric gearbox instead of the standard mechanical gearbox. This not only makes seed distribution easier with improved weight measurement, but also disengages the roller transfer. Rollers are either stainless steel or rubber coated. For the rollers, users can also choose between the standard mechanical gearbox or the hydraulic gearbox.

Sirio15.4 off-road forklift

BABINI GIORGIO is presenting the Sirio15.4 at FRUIT LOGISTICA, a new 15q off-road forklift with permanent four-wheel drive (image). Key advantages include excellent manoeuvrability and, thanks to a low centre of gravity, suitability for operation on terrain with steep longitudinal or transverse slopes. With an operator's platform that is very low to the ground, the forklift requires minimal height clearance. This ensures outstanding ergonomics when climbing into and operating the vehicle along with optimal front and rear visibility. Another advantage of the Sirio15.4 is its compact dimensions. Height and width are lower than other models to ensure easy use in newly designed orchards and vineyards with reduced planting distance. Entering cellars and warehouses with doorway clearances of just over two metres is no problem. The off-road forklift has a load capacity of 1,500 kilograms with a triplex height of 3.2 metres and a duplex height of 2.5 metres.

Stand system for bananas

The fully-integrated, patented stand system (image) from BanaNatural can be used to collect, transport, distribute and display banana bunches at the point of sale. Over the past year, it has been widely used in Greece across the entire supply chain. The eco-friendly steel stand is reusable and eliminates the need for plastic crates or disposable boxes on supermarket shelves. Bananas on the stand remain attached to the stem from storage to sale. This prevents the loss of natural juices and extends the shelf life. Bananas are yellow with uniform colouring and better quality. The innovative system has helped increase sales in Greece, significantly reduce losses, and generate higher profits. Another advantage of the BanaNatural stand system: banana bundles are not separated, which reduces the amount of fungicides required.

Super sweet and deep purple

Super sweet and deep purple
Erasmus F1 asparagus

The vegetable seed breeding company Bejo is introducing Erasmus F1 (image), the first 100% male purple asparagus, at FRUIT LOGISTICA 2019. It can be cultivated in cold and medium-temperature climates. Fresh and unpeeled, it is ideal for salads, stir-fries or grilled. This super-sweet asparagus is best left uncooked to preserve the rich purple colour that can be lost during cooking. Due to its unique characteristics, Erasmus is positioned differently than the well-known green and white asparagus varieties and makes an interesting addition to the conventional asparagus assortment. Thanks to its sweet taste, it can be eaten raw – ideal for attracting the attention of younger consumers who like meals that are fast and healthy.

Faster to first harvest

Faster to first harvest
STARTER in practice

Developed by the Italian company BIOS, STARTER (image) is a unique product that improves rooting and stimulates the natural immune system of young fruit trees. Optimum root development shortens the time to first harvest by at least six months. Other benefits include better fruit quality in terms of taste, aroma and colour, a remarkably effective resistance against pests and diseases, a higher yield and lower irrigation costs. The new product also helps prevent leaching and sublimation through chemical bonding of fertilizer elements and organic material. A longer availability of organic nitrogen reduces the need for nitrates. In addition, the use of biological substances from recycled materials, less pesticides and fertilizers and moderate water consumption help protect the environment.

State-of-the-art technology for harvesting blueberries

State-of-the-art technology for harvesting blueberries
KOKAN500S blueberry harvester

Air-jet harvesting technology can harvest over 95% of a plant's ripe blueberries without damage. The berries are shaken off the plant and collected on pneumatic cushions to prevent bruising. As a result, 80-90% of the total harvested blueberries can be sent to market. The proportion of white powder on the blueberry membrane is similar to a manual harvest. Pneumatic cushions are air-filled rubber parts on plastic catchers with continuous air flow to intercept shocks when the berries drop. According to the exhibitors, the unique air jet technology for fresh products is internationally patented. This state-of-the-art technology is used in the KOKAN500S harvester (image).

Automatically removes up to 300 avocado pits per minute

The 300-AVC Avocado Pitter (image) is, according to the exhibitor, the world's first machine capable of pitting avocados. Prior to the launch of this innovative system (international patent pending), avocados were manually pitted on a processing line. This procedure was much slower and less profitable. The avocado pitter was designed by R&D engineers at CTI FoodTech. The patent for the machine is owned by Biagio Crescenzo, who has registered more than 100 patents worldwide. Thanks to its high nutritional value and unique taste, the avocado has become widely recognised in recent years as a healthy premium food. This has led to rapid growth in its market potential. Innovative cultivation system optimizes apple harvesting

Innovative cultivation system optimizes apple harvesting
Guyotree apple tree

Guyotree® is the name of Feno's new apple tree with a horizontally bound fruit axis with six to eight vertical fruiting shoots – similar to the training systems used in viticulture. The tree comes from the nursery with a leader bent to a certain angle, which can be easily bent and tied into a horizontal position. Furthermore, the leader only has branches on one side. These grow stronger toward the end of the leader to counteract the natural tendency of the tree to produce stronger branches at the beginning of the bent leader. Key features of the innovative cultivation system include excellent uniform fruit colouration, a well-spaced pericarp that dries quickly, reduced spray drift for sensitive areas and suitability for steep terrains. Since there are no trellis branches, a narrow pericarp forms. All work can be carried out from the ground without a ladder or lift. It is also possible to mechanize cutting and thinning or to manage harvesting with robots.

Stress-free priming

Artal launched Primtal Stress-Free Technology cooperation with a team headed by Dr. Victor Flors from the Metabolic Integration and Cell Signalling Group at the Jaume University in Castellón. The concept is based on priming, a mechanism that activates the immune system of plants without causing stress. This new technology offers six key advantages. It stimulates and conditions the plant's immune system; activates a faster, more intense and more effective reaction to certain stresses and reduces related damage; works horizontally and activates different pathways to simultaneously protect crops. Priming is compatible with biological pest control and does not generate energy costs. It is also eco-friendly and supports sustainable agricultural production.

ROMOLO F1 hybrid artichoke

ROMOLO F1 (image) is the name of the first Romanesco-type hybrid artichoke for seeds. This hearty, uniform and productive variety is devoid of hair or thorns and is very tender. The hybrid of this Romanesco artichoke is medium-size. Green and purple artichokes are best for fresh consumption. They have a tender heart and sweet taste. According to the exhibitor, the spreading of the new artichoke's seed produces substantial quality and quantity. This reduces bedding costs due to the lower initial costs of the young plants. Conditions for plant health are improved and the incidence of diseases and fungal infections decreases since these are not normally transmitted by seeds. The artichoke requires less fertilizer and watering because plants grown from seeds develop a deeper root system and use of water sources more efficiently.

MULTIPOND multihead weighing system with 3D cameras

MULTIPOND weighing systems independently monitor optimal product flow. 3D cameras on the scales (image) linked to the controller provide data on the occupancy of the distribution cone and vibrator trays. A computer evaluates this information and independently initiates correct action. This system has been patented by the company. On earlier MULTIPOND weighing systems, pre-weighing provided details on the amount of product on the distribution cone. Now, the patented 3D cameras provide additional information about where and how much product is located on the distribution cone and in the feed trays. Based on this image information, the weighing system can respond, for example, by selectively controlling individual feed trays. This makes it possible to quickly and automatically correct overfills or detect and resolve product gaps.

Anastasia F1 melons

According to the exhibitor, Anastasia F1 is characterised by features that are unique and in-demand on national and international markets: small seeds, a relatively thin 1cm shell, and pulp that is bright red, crunchy and sweet. This new melon variety meets industry needs because it adapts perfectly to most plantations, including polyethylene tunnels (image) and outdoor cultivation. Early and late grafting is possible in winter in a greenhouse and in spring in a polytunnel. The plants are robust with excellent leaf cover of the fruits to protect them from sunburn. Anastasia F1 is an early variety, well balanced in growth and ideal for grafting. Good blossoming enables uniform production. The fruits have an elongated shape with dark-green, shiny stripes and weigh 16 to 20 kilograms.

Reduces or doubles working speed

Reduces or doubles working speed
BIVANGA 120.80 spading machine

Spading creates the best soil conditions for plant development: there is no machining sole and remaining plants are evenly worked into the soil. Spading also reduces erosion and works well with wet or dry soils. Unlike standard models, Selvatici spading machines are capable of reducing or doubling operating speeds and digging furrows twice as deep as a simple excavator. The new 120.80 series (image) is designed for tractors up to 80 HP. It has a minimum width of 90 centimetres and a working width of up to two metres. Mainly used for professional gardening in greenhouses, these machines are also effective in open fields because they can work the soil deeply in a single pass. The manufacturer's BIVANGA series spading machines and other models prevent the machining sole that reduces water permeability and is typically caused by rotary hoes, ploughs and other tillage equipment.

Frost protection for vineyards and orchards

Frost protection for vineyards and orchards
STOP-ICE® anti-frost candles

The probability of warmer winters and earlier growing seasons increases with climate change. Consequently, late frosts are likely to cause major damage to grapes and other fruits. The economic damage caused by frost in Europe's agricultural sector has reached enormous proportions in recent years. Fire is commonly used to combat late frost in fruit and winemaking. New on the market are STOP-ICE® anti-frost candles (image). Unlike other methods of frost control, STOP-ICE® candles heat the air and are suitable for both radiation and flow frost. They burn for approx. 10 hours and are reusable. The integrated eco-lighter is odourless and harmless to health. STOP-ICE® anti-frost candles were developed by the Slovenia-based company Svecarstvo Jurkovic and are distributed exclusively by Gesco Vertriebs- & Marketing GmbH from Austria.

Inspectra² inspection system

Following a highly-successful market launch last year, Compac, a member of the TOMRA group, announced the worldwide introduction of the Inspectra² internal inspection system (image) for fresh produce. Inspectra² was effectively implemented and improved fruit cleaning by 20%. In line with the interests of growers, this ensures that only the bad fruits are sorted out and the good ones kept for sale. Together with the award-winning Spectrim platform, Inspectra² can be used to classify external defects. Compac packhouses are now capable of consistently and accurately grading the external and internal qualities of apples, avocados, kiwis and citrus fruits at production speeds. External appearance is important for buyers’ purchase decisions, but internal quality is critical for consumer satisfaction. Fresh produce should always taste as good as it looks. Soft-DRY fruit snacks

Vitaina was created from the idea of developing a practical and healthy snack that contains all-natural vitamins and minerals (image). The exhibitor places equal importance on protecting the environment and promoting sustainable agriculture. After years of research on conventional drying methods and the related primary oxidative factors, Vitaina developed and patented the Soft-DRY® antioxidative cold dehydration process. This makes it possible to exclude the primary oxidative factors and gently dry the fruit below 40°C, while preserving the natural taste, colour and the healthy properties of vitamins and minerals. Rows are now completely closed

The patent-pending water collection system (image) from VOEN Covering Systems drains rainwater from a fruit or vegetable plantation over a larger area. This is ensured by the "natural" slope of the orchard in the direction of the planted rows. Alternatively, the inclination in the direction of the rows or the transverse direction can be achieved by installing two different pole heights. As a result, the rainwater is collected in the covers at intervals of about 10 metres and then emptied into a gutter installed under the rain covers. Unlike the original VOEN covers, the area in the middle of the rows is completely closed by an asymmetrical sheet to prevent water from flowing into the orchard. By integrating water drainage into the rain covers, VOEN offers a new component and a cost-effective alternative to film tunnels and other costly protection systems. This is an innovative solution for crops requiring a regulated water supply.
